CRA Announces Changes to Online Mail and Represent a Client

Friday June 13, 2025

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has announced several changes to their online systems to be placed in effect this June and July.

CRA Mail Now Delivered Online

Effective, Monday, June 16, 2025, the CRA is moving forward with phase two of their transition to online mail which will now be delivered through the CRA’s digital portal service, My Business. This step mandates that all existing businesses clients will be transitioned to online mail as the default method of most business correspondence including notices, letters, forms, statements and other CRA communication documents. This changes also includes the withdrawal of Canada Post services in associations with the CRA as well.

Improvements to Represent A Client

Additionally, the CRA has announced that on July 15, 2025, representatives will be able to access their client’s account by removing the five-day processing time through improvements to their Authorization Request service in Represent a Client. This change was made to improve service delivery for taxpayers and their representatives.

To gain instant access to an individual’s account going forward, representatives can use the alternative process for individuals, the first step being the use of the authorization request service in Represent a Client. Then, representatives must obtain information from an individual’s notice of assessments, sent to them at least six months prior.

Please note that the CRA requires that the person submitting the authorization request be the same person seeking to be authorized, or an individual already associated with a GroupID or Business Number (BN) registered in Represent a Client.

Changes to EFILE Software for Individual Clients

In alignment with the changes to Represent a Client, starting July 15, 2025, the CRA will also discontinue the “Authorize A Representative” feature in the EFILE software for individual clients. These changes further align with their ongoing efforts to enhance security and streamline access to taxpayer’s information. However, it is important to note that this change will not impact authorization requests submitted through EFILE for Business clients. As a result of this change, tax professionals must now visit “Represent a Client” to obtain authorization for individual clients.
