Ontario’s Working for Workers Act, 2023, marks a significant shift in employment standards, that introduces key updates to employer information requirements.
The Working for Workers Act, 2023
The Working for Workers Act, 2023, which passed in Ontario in March 2024, is part of a broader legislative initiative that comprises of four separate acts collectively known as the “Working for Workers” acts. Together with subsequent amendments, this legislation has introduced significant changes to employment standards across the province to shape employer obligations.
New Regulations – Effective July 1, 2025
On November 29, 2024, the Ontario Government announced a regulatory amendment under the Employment Standards Act that changes the information employers must provide to employees.
Effective July 1, 2025, employers with 25 or more employees will be required to provide specific job-related information “to an employee or prospective employee, in writing.” This must be provided on or before their first day or work or where that is not practicable, as soon as reasonably possible.
The written disclosure must include the following details:
- The legal name of the employer, including any operating or business names if different.
- The employer’s address, telephone number, and one or more contact names.
- The location where the employee is expected to initially perform their work.
- The employee’s starting wage or commissions, as applicable.
- The employer’s pay period and designated pay day.
- A general description of the employee’s initial anticipated hours of work.
The new requirements do not apply to individuals placed through temporary help agencies.
