Ontario Minimum Wage Increases

Friday September 22, 2017

As you may know, Ontario is increasing the general minimum wage rate on October 1st. This latest rate is the result of changes to legislation that was passed in 2014 to tie annual minimum wage increases to the province’s Consumer Price Index.

  • General minimum wage increases from $11.40/hour to $11.60/hour.
  • Student minimum wage increases from $10.70/hour to $10.90/hour – this rate applies to students under the age of 18 who work 28 hours a week or less when school is in session, or work during a school break or summer holidays.

Ontario recently introduced legislation that, if passes, would raise the general minimum wage to $14.00/hour in January 1, 2018, and then to $15.00/hour on January 1, 2019. Annual adjustments to the minimum wage based on the rate of inflation would resume in October 2019.
